Gyeonggi Province issues a highly pathogenic avian influenza risk advisory
Total mobilization of quarantine vehicles Intensive sterilization of roads, paddy fields and fields around poultry farms, promotion of quarantine rules for livestock farms through a dedicated officer for each farm, and on-site inspection

-Reporter In-Gyu Ha
(Brake News Northeastern Gyeonggi Province) = Gyeonggi Province decided this weekend to be the biggest hurdle to prevent the spread of avian influenza (AI), and issued a “highly pathogenic avian influenza risk advisory” on the 29th.

The advisory is issued from January 29th to February 10th, and special quarantine measures are being promoted for laying hens, which are recently spreading among poultry farms.

This week, six out of seven cases confirmed as highly pathogenic AI in the province were concentrated in laying hen farms in the province, and the risk of spreading the virus was high due to cold waves and heavy snowfalls that go down to -15°C, so they decided to pursue this special countermeasure.

First of all, a map of farm quarantine rules and confirmation of suspicious stocks is conducted for laying hen farms. In addition, all available quarantine vehicles are mobilized to intensively disinfect the roads, rice paddies, and fields around the farm to prevent virus inflow from outside.

In particular, this weekend, the city and county quarantine officers will be mobilized to conduct a thorough inspection of maps through 1:1 phone calls and on-site checks for all poultry farms in the province.

The key points to be checked are quarantine management of edible egg transport vehicles, operation of farm disinfection equipment and facilities, prohibition of entry of outsiders and vehicles into the farm, observance of quarantine rules for farm workers, and measures to prevent invasion of livestock by wild animals.

The province also demanded that poultry farms and livestock facilities comply with the quarantine regulations.

First, the entry of people and vehicles into the farm should be controlled, and in case of inevitable entry, stage 2 disinfection should be performed. In addition, when eggs are taken out, they must be reported to the local city or county one day in advance, and the transshipment site and transport equipment must be thoroughly disinfected.

In addition, in winter when the temperature is low, an oxidizing agent-based disinfectant should be used to maintain sufficient disinfecting effect, and a blocking net should be installed in the compost to prevent invasion of rats, cats, and wild birds.

Livestock and Forestry Bureau chief Kim Seong-sik said, “26 cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) have been confirmed in Gyeonggi Province so far, and 24 cases of antigens have been detected in wild birds, so it is judged that the virus is widespread in the outdoors. The ban is absolutely necessary,” he said. “To prevent further proliferation, we ask farmers and related industries to take thorough quarantine measures.”

Meanwhile, 5778 million chickens, ducks, and quail are being raised in 3,424 poultry farms in Gyeonggi-do. Of these, there are 2,459 small-scale farmers with fewer than 3,000, raising 178,843.

Since the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in the laying hens of Yeoju in December of last year, the province is implementing an administrative order containing five compliance matters, including rapid emergency quarantine measures such as killing and forcibly disposing of the patient.

In addition, we are putting all our efforts into interception prevention, such as operating 32 base disinfection facilities (25 locations operating 24 hours) and intensive disinfection using 136 quarantine vehicles.
