(Namyangju = Break News, Northeastern Gyeonggi) = Namyangju City (Mayor Gwanghan Jo) held a launching ceremony for the environmental innovation project “Ecopia Clean City Construction Project” to reduce fine dust at the City Hall Plaza on the 30th.

The Ecopia Clean City construction project is to effectively reduce fine dust that affects health and realize universal environmental welfare that citizens can feel. The city plans to effectively reduce 'road scattering dust', which accounts for the largest proportion of fine dust emissions, by putting in a small-scale road cleaning vehicle for the first time in the country.

The event started with a business explanation from the head of the environmental policy department in the presence of Namyangju Mayor Jo Gwang-han, officials from participating companies, and city officials. Then, the implementation company's employees read the pledge, a safety vest wearing ceremony, and a demonstration of the operation of a cleaning vehicle followed.

Mayor Jo Gwang-han said, “Fine dust has a direct and indirect adverse effect on our health and overall life, from respiratory and cognitive diseases. We will realize universal environmental welfare where all citizens can enjoy the benefits.”

According to the city, the project is divided into three zones: △ Zone 1 - Hwado, Sudong, Hopyeong, Pyeongnae, △ Zone 2 - Jinjeop, Onam, Byeolnae, △ Zone 3, Wabu, Jingeon, and Toegyewon. Existing road sweepers are installed on major roads, It is promoted in a way that three-dimensionally reduces fine dust by injecting a small cleaning vehicle to the back roads that are more closely related to life, such as residential areas, commercial areas, and alleys.

First of all, it plans to gradually expand the business, such as putting in 9 cleaning vehicles in the first phase this year, 24 in the second phase in 2022, and 30 in the third phase thereafter.

The city expects that this project will not only improve the air environment but also improve the quality of life of citizens by protecting citizens from various respiratory diseases.

Meanwhile, 50.3% of Korea's fine dust (PM10) emissions are scattering dust, of which 36.7% is road ash scattering dust. Road ash scattering dust is a particulate matter in which the dust deposited on the road due to vehicle exhaust gas and wear of tires and brake pads is scattered back into the atmosphere by the movement of the vehicle. It is known to be much more harmful to the human body than ordinary dust, such as directly penetrating into the lungs of humans and causing respiratory diseases such as asthma and lung cancer.
