Writer Ahn Jae-sik published “Letters from 27 noblemen in the late Joseon Dynasty, letters from Woo-kyung Ahn Jung-gu”

It is evaluated as a valuable material for studying the elegant strokes of the last gentry of the Joseon Dynasty, the artistry of the calligraphy, and the phases of the times and life history at the time.

-Reporter Ha In-gyu

(Break News Northeast Gyeonggi Province) = "Letters from 27 noblemen in the late Joseon Dynasty, a collection of letters from Woo-kyung An Jeong-gu", compiled by poet and writer Ahn Jae-sik, was published by Academic Books and Publishers (CEO Byung-hwan Kim).

This book was received from 27 key figures who participated in state affairs in the late Joseon Dynasty when Woo-kyung An Jeong-gu (禹卿 安珽求, 1828-1881), the great-grandfather of author Ahn Jae-sik, served as Chungju Youngjang (忠淸道後營將, 1879-1880). This is a compilation of 32 handwritten letters. Moreover, it is very rare and unusual to publish a number of famous figures in history who can be known by name at once.

According to Ahn’s publications, his grandfather inherited the letter from his great-grandfather, and his father, Jong-hwan Ahn Pil-hyung (鍾煥 安珌炯, 1893-1949), who was a scholar of Chinese classics, placed the letters in a bundle on both sides of Korean paper. 褙接) and compiled it into a booklet. The cover of the book is 35 cm thick when folded, 17 cm wide, 29.7 cm long, and 595 cm long when unfolded. After that, Ahn's father passed away, and his mother, Mrs. Lee Ki-man, inherited it, and it was revealed that it was passed down to Ahn, cherishing it even after going through the Korean War and living as a refugee.

In fact, the downfall of the Joseon Dynasty, the merger of Korea and Japan, the period of Japanese colonial rule, liberation and division, Korean turmoil, etc... Preserving the original form for 144 years while living through turbulent times is a family legacy. It cannot be maintained without pride and utmost sincerity.

According to this book, Woo-kyung Ahn Jung-gu, whose main office is Juksan (Shin), is from Yongin. He is a descendant of Munseonggong Hoeheon Anhyang (安珦), and is the 14th generation of Daegyo Gong Sinson (信孫), the progenitor of the Daegyo Gong faction of the Juksan An clan. He was born in 1828 as the eldest son of his father An Jong-byeok (安鍾璧, Sungkyun Jinsa) and mother Hampyeong-i. After that, he went through Inchao Manho, Training Center Housewife, Dochongdosa, Military Gyeom Propaganda Officer, Training Center Cheomjeong, Sacheon County Superintendent, and Buho-gun, and then rose to the Ministry of Government Administration, the third highest ranking official. In 1880, he was promoted to the rank of 2nd rank officer, and the following year as Sakju Busa (朔州都護府使, North Pyongan Province).

However, he died in 1881 at the age of 54 in the process of dealing with a great flood during the chaotic period of the late Joseon Dynasty. In the country, in order to honor the spirit of love for the people of Woo-gyeong Ahn Jung-gu, who died while sharing the hardships with the people as a saint of death, he was transported to Yongcheon-ri, Baekam-myeon, Yongin-si, where his birthplace is located, and mourned with a ceremony with a formal dress.

The 27 handwritten letters in this book are as follows. Heungchinwang Lee Jae-myeon, Chungjeonggong Min Yeong-hwan, Younguijeong Kim Byeong-guk, Daejehak Min Tae-ho, Byeongjo Judge Kim Ki-seok, Muwi Captain Lee Gyeong-ha, calligrapher Min Yeong-ik, Min Gyeom-ho, Kim Byeong-ju, ○ Soo-jong, Hong Jae-hyeon, Kim Heung-gyun, Kim Gyeong-gyun, Jo Yong-hun, Jo Shin-hee, Lee Tae-yong, Min Yeong-jun, Heo Seub. These are Lee Bong-eui, Park Jang-ha, Shim Sang-gi, Kim Je-bong, Lee Myeong-hyeon, Lee Doo-hyeon, Sim Neung-ho, Jeong Yak-poong, and Sim Yun-taek.

These were people under the jurisdiction who lived during the reigns of King Cheoljong and Gojong, Confucian scholars, Neungchambong, Judges, Gyori, Knights, Training Judges, Prefectural Governor, Pastor, Chief of Knights, Daesaeseong, Doseungji, Geumgun Villa, Eoyeongdaejang, Pododaejang, Daesaheon, Hanseongjwayun, Naegeumwi It is characterized by being made up of various classes, ranging from chiefs, servants, military governors, governors, drugstore manufacturers, six-year-old judges, Seonhyecheongdangsang, Panuigeumbusa, and Yeonguijeong.

The content of the letter is different. The heartbreaking fatherly love of Mr. Ahn Jeong-gu, concerned about the future of his eldest son, appears throughout the letters, and Min Tae-ho, the judge of Yijo at the time, said, 'I am more desperate to mourn the death of the deceased, but I am sorry for the dead. They also complain of the sadness of not being able to follow. Heo Seup of Geumgun Villa (Second Rank, Chief of Security) conveys his pitiful circumstances, saying, 'I am trying to preserve my stubborn life as a resident owner, but it is very difficult to obtain candles, so please show me your kindness urgently.'

Criminal Judge Hong Jae-hyeon said, 'Ji-sa Jeong, who served the queen mother for 10 years and delivered her orders, was humiliated by a person below her, so please relieve her resentment.' There is also a request to save face.'

19-year-old Min Yeong-hwan asked, 'It is unfair to ask his uncle to pay the taxes or debts that his nephew couldn't pay, so please correct them.' There is also a content that assesses 'contained and demanded tax payment'.

Hongmungwan Gyori Lee Tae-yong said, "My father is suffering from an illness and is exhausted with energy, but in Doha, a plague broke out like fire and the death toll continued, and everyone was afraid... Un Mi-ryeong (Min Yeong-ik) set the celebration on the 28th,' and Prince Heung's King Lee Jae-myeon said, 'It has been several days since he had been on duty, and Crown Prince Lee Cheok (later Sunjong) contracted smallpox and recovered.' tell

Pochimrang Shim Yun-taek said, ‘I have been lying in bed for dozens of days, but recently a letter from my family said that the crops had been cut, so I couldn’t stand it all the more because I was worried from afar.’ It is bittersweet to compare the officials of the time with the politicians of today.

In this way, the collection of letter letters of the late Joseon Dynasty deserves to be designated as a tangible cultural asset, considering their elegant brush strokes, the artistry of their calligraphy, and the diversity of their contents. It is because we can know the unrefined everyday life at that time, the unpretentious emotions and the situation of the times, the well-being and favors of the officials, and the way of life, and it is also a very important data for research on life history. Also, since there are new characters that have not been researched and announced so far, I think it will contribute to their character exploration.

Writer Ahn Jae-sik said, “The original text of this book is written in cursive or semi-cursive, so it is difficult to type without an expert’s accurate deportation and translation. So, the compilation work started in 2019, and in November 2020, the Korean History Compilation Committee and Professor Park Sang-soo of the Classical Translation Institute completed the translation. After that, for two years, I went through confirmation procedures such as collecting data and annotating, and it was published in four years after undergoing proofreading and proofreading by writer Won Sook-hee (元淑姬) of the editorial board.”

And Ahn explained the characteristics of the booklet so that readers can easily understand and appreciate it.

① Signposts (cursive and semi-cursive) were scanned and published in their original form to preserve the artistic quality of the typeface.

② By writing the number on the original reduced version, everyone knows the order of writing the letter.

③ Talcho (脫草) Made it easier to study Chinese characters by attaching a single sound in Hangeul to Chinese characters.

④ I honestly recorded the profiles of the characters appearing in the letter book.

⑤ The meaning of the words or sentences was easily explained by writing down the annotations in detail.
